Although my Dad had worked for big companies that gave him a big paycheck and outside benefits, I believe he regretted not starting a business in his youth.
Even if he had wanted to start a business, he had no idea which business to invest in or how to go about it.
My father was a brilliant man full of wisdom. And it was in his retirement years that he finally understood something: his wisdom could be sold to others. His knowledge could be bought.
So he wrote books to tell others what he had discovered. He started a soap company of his own. He began tutoring people on the same skills he had been rendering to the companies he worked for. He created his own fortune by selling a solution to a problem.
Business isn’t about having a shop. Business isn’t just about buying and selling. If it solves a problem, it’s business.
Robert Kiyosaki said it best in Rich Dad Poor Dad
> "The rich focus on their asset columns while everyone else focuses on their income statements."
Your assets are the problems you can solve.
THE BIG LIE WE WERE TAUGHT
Most of us grew up thinking business means one thing: Buy goods. Sell goods. Make profit.
So if you don’t have a shop, inventory, or money to buy products, you think: "I can’t do business."
That’s a lie.
The world has changed. In 2026, the biggest businesses don’t even sell physical products.
Google doesn’t sell you anything. It solves the problem of "I need information". Uber doesn’t own cars. It solves the problem of "I need a ride". Netflix doesn’t sell DVDs. It solves the problem of "I’m bored".
Business = Problem + Solution + Payment.
If you can solve a problem, you can build a business. Period.
4 TYPES OF BUSINESS YOU CAN START TODAY WITHOUT PRODUCTS
Forget inventory. Forget shops. Here are 4 types of business built on solving problems:
1. SERVICE BUSINESS: SELL YOUR TIME AND SKILL
The Problem You Solve: "I need this done, but I don’t know how."
Examples: Graphic design, writing, coding, accounting, tutoring, laptop repair, cleaning, consulting and so on.
This is how my dad started. He took the 30 years of skills he gave to companies and started teaching them directly to people.
You don’t need a product. You ARE the product.
Start by selling 1 hour of your skill. Then package it.
2. INFORMATION BUSINESS: SELL YOUR KNOWLEDGE
The Problem You Solve: "I’m confused. Teach me how."
Examples: Online courses, ebooks, YouTube tutorials, coaching, workshops, books.
My dad’s books were an information business. He took what was in his head and put it on paper. Now it pays him even while he sleeps.
In 2026, knowledge is the most valuable currency. If you figured out how to pass an exam, grow plants, trade crypto, or bake cakes, someone will pay you to learn it. You don’t need to be a genius. You just need to be 1 step ahead.
3. ATTENTION BUSINESS: SELL AN AUDIENCE
The Problem You Solve: "I’m bored" or "I need community" or "I need to be entertained/informed".
Examples: Blog, YouTube channel, TikTok page, podcast, newsletter.
Brands pay you because you solved the problem of gathering people’s attention.
That’s why I write articles. I’m solving the problem of "How do I make money work for me?" for thousands of people. Then companies pay to reach those people. You don’t need products. You need trust and attention.
4. SYSTEM/ASSET BUSINESS: SELL A SYSTEM THAT WORKS WITHOUT YOU
The Problem You Solve: "I need this, but I don’t want to do it myself."
Examples: Rental properties, SaaS software, vending machines, apps, franchise, e-commerce store with staff.
This is what "making money work for you" looks like. You build the system once. It solves the problem 1000 times without you. My dad’s soap company was this. He created the formula and system. Other people mixed and sold it.
3 MINDSET SHIFTS TO SEE BUSINESS EVERYWHERE
1. STOP LOOKING FOR PRODUCTS. START LOOKING FOR PROBLEMS
Rich people ask: "What problem can I solve?" Poor people ask: "What product can I sell?"
Every complaint is a business idea.
"Traffic is bad" = Uber.
"I’m lonely" = Facebook.
"I can’t cook" = Food delivery.
2. YOUR EXPERIENCE IS AN ASSET
> "The single most powerful asset we all have is our mind. If it is trained well, it can create enormous wealth." - Rich Dad Poor Dad
My dad wasted 15 years thinking his experience only belonged to his company.
When he realized his experience belonged to HIM, he got rich. What do you know that others struggle with? That’s your business.
3. BUSINESS IS TRANSACTIONAL
Every time value is exchanged, it’s business. Advice for money. Time for money. Attention for money. Solution for money. You’re already in business. You just haven’t started charging for it.
WHO IS THIS FOR?
This is for you if you’ve ever said:
"I don’t have goods to sell"
"I don’t have capital"
"I’m not a business person"
Good. You don’t need goods. You need a problem you can solve better than anyone else.
The laptop repairman I met was running a service business but felt broke because he thought business meant "owning a company". My dad ran information and system businesses in retirement and finally felt free.
Stop asking: "What should I sell?"
Start asking: "What problem can I solve?"
That one question will unlock 100 business ideas. You don’t need to quit your job tomorrow. Use your job to learn skills, save money, and study problems. Then build your business on the side. In 5 years, you’ll thank yourself.
